Approaching the real world of work can be scary…
‘What if I am not good enough?’
‘What do I need to wear?’
‘Will my colleagues like me?’
These were all questions that swarmed my mind prior to starting my placement here at Campus. But armed with my tote bag, recent ASOS clothing order, and my primary-school-style packed lunch, I threw myself into the company head-first…and I haven’t looked back since!
My name is Anna, and I have recently finished the second year of my undergraduate degree. I study Communication and Media at the University of Leeds, and I have a passion for writing, editing, and influencer marketing, alongside performing, and pop culture!
Throughout my undergrad, I have been a part of many societies, including Musical Theatre, Contemporary Dance, and Student Radio. I was also the President of Her Campus, an international magazine society. I wrote many
articles, and marketed our society using social media and by planning on-campus events – the style of work that I currently still undertake here at Campus HQ.
As a Placement Account Executive, I support my managers and colleagues on multiple campaigns with amazing brands such as Virgin Media, Foreign Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO), The Economist, and Studydrive. The best thing about working for an agency is the variation in the work I undertake, as every campaign has its own unique approach.
For example, my work with the FCDO included editing articles and social media content to promote travel safety guidance to students heading abroad. Did you know it is illegal to wear high heels in some parts of Greece?
Then, with Virgin Media, I managed a group of brand ambassadors whilst they sold broadband packages to their fellow students. It has been great to have this much responsibility and trust this early on in my career. I even embarked on a Freshers tour where I attended multiple universities across the UK, including Sheffield, LSE, Cambridge and Exeter, executing events for The Economist!
My favourite part of my placement, however, is the office culture. The great thing about Campus is that we are all friends outside of work too. Nothing beats a pint at ‘Toast’ after work, or even bottomless sushi with the gang! The relaxed atmosphere and safe space Campus provides have created the perfect bridge for me between university life and being a young professional.
It has been a lot of hard work – but I remind myself that this is okay. Doing a placement year between your second and third year is designed to show you the realities of working, with early mornings and later evenings! It prepares you not only with skills to carry on in your final year and future career, but also it prepares you on how to balance a schedule, create a routine, and your time-management skills.
I can’t wait to see what other campaigns I will work on here and what other crazy marketing techniques I will be chalking off as experience!
